DISCOVER ITALY: PIAZZA NAVONA

posted by Home In Italy on June 25th, 2013

From the shadows of the ancient, winding streets of the historic center of Rome you suddenly come upon the breathtaking magnificence of Piazza Navona (Navona Square), born as a place of spectacle and still today a spectacular open air show; an architectural miracle in the heart of the Eternal City, filled with masterpieces in perfect harmony with each other.

This piazza, which displays the genius of Bernini and Borromini, is one of the finest Baroque Masterpiece in papal Rome. Its harmony and colours, combined with its elegance, give it a charm that is enhanced by the surprising contrast of architecturally sober houses alternating with a number of monumental buildings.

Of all Rome’s piazzas, this pedestrian precinct is one where the liveliness of Roman life is most tangible. It has long been a meeting place for the inhabitants of Rome. In past, in addition to the market, processions and spectacles were held here – included “naumachiae”, or mock naval battles.

Today the life in the piazza revolves around the open-air-cafés and the seasonal fairs. During the summer the piazza provides a continuous festival of painters, caricaturists, fortune-teller and buskers, who entertain visitors until late.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: SICILIAN CANNOLI

posted by Home In Italy on June 13th, 2013

SHELLS
3 /4 cups flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1 pinch salt
2 tablespoons melted butter
3 /4 cup marsala
egg white (for sealing)
oil (for frying)

In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add butter and marsala, then knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until well mixed. Wrap the dough in Saran wrap and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours.

Roll out the dough very thin. Cut it into rounds using a 4 inch cookie cutter. Roll each round again until it is very thin. Roll each round around a cannoli tube, tightly, and seal with the egg white.

Fry in hot oil, turning, until golden. Drain on paper towels and let cool. Gently twist cannoli tube to remove the shell. Cool completely.

FILLING
5 cups ricotta cheese
1 1/4 cups confectioners’ sugar
1 orange rind, grated/zest
mini chocolate chip

Mix together (by hand with wooden spoon) all filling ingredients. Keep covered in the refrigerator until your shells are cooled, then fill the pastry bag with the filling.

Use a plain or open star tip. Insert it to the center of the shell and fill to one end, then repeat this step on the other end. Dust with the confectioners’ sugar.

VENICE INTERNATIONAL ART EXHIBITION

posted by Home In Italy on June 4th, 2013

Venice is ready to celebrate its 55th International Art Exhibition, set to run in the Arsenal and Giardini della Biennale, June 1st to November 24th.

The event is called Il Palazzo Enciclopedico or The Encyclopedic Palace, in memory of the self-taught, Italian-American artist Marino Auriti, creator of a project that originally bore this title.

Auriti’s design is of “an imaginary museum that was meant to house all worldly knowledge, bringing together the greatest discoveries of the human race, from the wheel to the satellite.

The artist’s dream remained only an idea, although many artists, writers and scientists have attempted to bring it to life – by way of various studies - throughout the years.

The Biennale will be another variation on such attempts, a sort of experimental research exhibition not only for art, but for architecture as well. Gioni and Rem Koolhaas are the principal names heading up important shows this year.
