A rainbow stands out in the small archipelago of islands in the Venice lagoon. It is the island of Burano, famous all over the world for the extraordinary colors of its houses.
Small houses of all colors close to one another, green, purple, pink, blue, red and yellow ones, generally built on two or three floors. These were the fishermen's houses, they made them easily distinguishable by painting them with bright colors. In this way, they could easily recognize them on their return from the lagoon in case of fog.
In fact, Burano, more than an island, is a small archipelago made up of four islets connected by bridges. The inhabitants of Altino, an ancient Roman city in the Veneto region, in the past took refuge here to defend themselves from the barbarian invasions.
The three most famous islands of the Venice Lagoon are Murano, Burano and Torcello: in the first one you will discover the tradition of glass processing, the famous Palazzo Giustinian, the Lighthouse and the “Basilica dei Santi Maria e Donato”; in Torcello, the Church of Santa Fosca, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the famous “Ponte del Diavolo”.
Burano is located at the north end of the Venice Lagoon and is famous all over the world for its lace-making.
The Lace Museum illustrates the development of lace-making in the area. The shops sell lace items, such as sheets and clothes, as well as "bussolai buranei", the typical butter biscuits.
In Burano, you will find informal restaurants serving fish specialties from the lagoon.
Among the most visited attractions, we also find the church of San Martino, characterized by the leaning bell tower of the seventeenth century that contains a canvas by Giambattista Tiepolo, and the well.
If your vacation in Venice is longer than a weekend, do not miss a visit to Burano and have a look at our selection of luxury villas for rent in Italy.
