The wines of Piedmont are among the most prized in the world, red and white wines that have conquered the palates of experts and wine lovers. The region wedged between the western Alps, the Apennines and the western part of the Po valley has succeeded in bringing the production of wine to high excellence, despite not having a production of large quantity compared to other larger areas. Over 50 types of DOC and DOGC wines, noble reds and delicate whites, bubbles and dessert wines. The high quality of Piedmonts wines depends on many environmental factors but is also based on passion and tradition that made it available to cultivate large vineyards for great wines.
In terms of refined wines, Italy must compete with other nations like France, home to some of the most renowned and expensive wines in the world, but not only. The discovery of wine by new countries to divine nectar, like Asia, has brought new producers from faraway nations. However, some Italian wines and labels have been able to resist new trends and competition, focusing on a single factor; high quality. Piedmont is one of the favorite lands for wine in our country, where every region produces refined bottles, sought after and admired by sommeliers and wine lovers. Reviewing the production of red wines, the area of production that is perhaps best known is that of the Langhe from which DOC and DOGC wines are born, loved and appreciated internationally. The other production areas which are also well known are Alto Monferrato, Basso Monferrato, Tortonese and Roero, but excellent quality wines are produced throughout the whole region.
Barolo is the red wine of Piedmont par excellence: the list of full-bodied red wines, with its unique and inimitable products produced in Piedmont, includes other names that have become part of the elite of great wines. Such as Nebbiolo, Barbaresco, Dolcetto, Grignolino and Roero. Perhaps less known to most of the people, but not to connoisseurs is Verduno Pelaverga, a DOC wine produced in the municipalities of Verduno, La Morra and Roddi d’Alba, in the province of Cuneo.
Leaving the most classic itineraries, we find great refined wines like Ghemme, a DOGC produced in Romagnano Sesia, in the province of Novara.
Among the white wines let's not forget the Roero Arneis and the Langhe Favorita, in the Cuneo area, but great wines are found throughout the region. And last but not least, remember the production of sparkling wines in the Asti area or the Erbaluce di Caluso.
For lovers of refined wine, Piedmont is a truly special place.
